Enrichments

Play is pivotal. We believe all students need access to creative exploration, play-based collaboration and a chance to explore expression and play.

Bay View values the importance of the arts and includes visual art and music in our classroom learning. In addition to our creative classroom teachers, we have Santa Cruz City School District art and music teachers to provide additional standards-based instruction in music and visual art.

We are dedicated to working together to ensure the best arts experience possible for our children. An art education provides an opportunity for self directed learning and self expression, improves self esteem and confidence, sharpens concentration skills, and is associated with academic success in math and reading.

Classroom Music

All Bay View students receive regular music instruction. The primary grades enjoy singing and movement with a primary music teacher. Third through fifth graders attend music class and learn musical concepts, sing, dance and play instruments.

Music instruction is educationally beneficial for children. Studies have shown that students who study music score consistently higher on math and verbal standardized tests. Also, participation in music makes for a more enjoyable school and social life.

After School Band

Third, fourth and fifth graders can choose to join the school band. The band meets after school and students can play flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone or percussion. The band performs several times during the year and is an integral part of the school.

The Life Lab garden is a place for students to learn about science and our environment. It is also a place to have fun and to work together as a team.

Our Life Lab instructor works with classroom teachers to determine how they can use the Life Lab garden to enhance classroom learning. Students enjoy having the chance to get their hands dirty and explore the garden as they learn about scientific concepts.

Students contribute to maintaining the garden though weeding, planting and harvesting. Green Apple Day is an annual event which encourages parents to also come help in the garden alongside their children.

The Bay View Library is more than just a vital place for the peaceful reflection, rest and safety that every student needs from time to time. It is also a gateway to navigating not only literacy, but an understanding of how to safely and responsibly interact with the internet.

Our librarians teach curriculum at all grade levels on best practices for our students to protect themselves and grow their knowledge in using technology and online resources.

Library

At the Santa Cruz County Outdoor Science School, fifth and sixth grade students experience a four- or five-day residential, hands-on science program. Students focus on investigating the rich coastal redwood forest ecosystem that surrounds our coastal community.

During field class, students study the forest, meadows, and streams with a qualified naturalist.

Through the use of science inquiry, games, and other activities, naturalists teach ecological concepts. Children see the interrelationships between plants and animals and learn about the effect they, as people, have on the environment. A richer understanding of their natural surroundings helps prepare them for the mature decisions they will make as adults.
